Funa grows up to 20 meters tall and has a blackish-brown bark fissured and cracked bark. It is a common plant found in most of the islands in the Maldives, flowering and fruiting from December to August. The flowers are white and fragrant with yellow stamens. fruit of the Funa plant are globose to obovoid. It is a multi-purpose tree. The wood is hard and strong, making it a good material for construction and boat building. A medicinally important polyphenolic compound, known as Neoflavanoid, was first isolated from the seeds of this plant. The extracted oil from the seeds can be used a biodiesel and also has anti-inflammatory, anti-cancerous and is used as a skin tonic and deodorant.
