Asian Koel

Eudynamys scolopacea

The Asian Koel or locally known as 'Koveli' is a large cuckoo that measures 39-46cm in length. They have a strong, curved bill, long and wide tail that tapers slightly at the end, and strong short legs. Males have glossy black plumage with shiny blue-green or purple shine, while the females have brown plumage and light spots on wings with white or yellow spots on the chest and pale with dark stripes on the belly and pale, soft stripes on the tail. Juvenile males have duller plumage and white stripes on the belly. Juvenile females have slightly more patterned appearance than adult females and more noticeable stripes on the tail.
