Common Greenshank

Tringa nebularia

The Common Greenshank or 'Chonchon Ilolhi' is an occasional migratory bird found in the Maldives, during the North-East Monsoon (December to mid-April). It is commonly found in the wetlands, with specific locations such as the Ha. Baarah Mangrove Protected Area. Typically measuring between 30-35cm in length, the Common Greenshank is characterized by a long, sturdy bill that tilts slightly upwards and long dull green legs. Upper parts of breeding adults are streaked with black-brown, and the head, neck and upper chest have darker streaks. Non-breeding adults have unform grey upperparts, with a white face, neck and chest. Juveniles look similar to non-breeding adults but are browner on top with buff edges on the feathers and a more streaked neck and chest.
